A Protected Paradise in the Mediterranean
The Cetacean Sanctuary is a marine triangle that includes Italy, France, and the Principality of Monaco. Established in 1999, it protects a vast area of over 96,000 square kilometers, involving 124 French municipalities, 87 Italian ones, and Monaco itself.
The triangle stretches between Toulon, Capo Falcone (Sardinia), and Fosso Chiarone (Tuscany), hosting one of the highest concentrations of cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea.
The sanctuary’s richness stems from a special current that brings plankton and krill to the surface—delicacies loved by whales and dolphins. Thanks to this abundance of food, eight species of cetaceans thrive here:
This ecosystem is rare and precious—prompting three Mediterranean nations to unite for its protection. In fact, Italy first recognized the area in 1991 as a marine protected zone of international importance.
One of the most magical ways to explore this sanctuary is through whale watching excursions. Boats follow a strict code of conduct to protect cetaceans and preserve their peace.
A marine biologist is onboard each trip, sharing insights, answering questions, and collecting research data. The experience is suitable for all ages—exciting for kids, fascinating for adults.
Cetaceans are mammals, meaning:
Some, like the sperm whale, can hold their breath for long periods, but eventually must resurface to breathe—swimming with heads above water to keep their nostrils clear.
