If you are looking for an enchanting and charming getaway, you cannot miss an afternoon at Villa Grock in Imperia, the Museum of the Clown. This marvellous villa and its park, built by the exceptional Adrien Wettach, known as Grock (born in Switzerland on 10 January 1880, consecrated ‘King of Clowns’ at the Paris Olympia in 1919.) represent an authentic paradise for dreamers and visionaries, those who believe in the magic of life and games.
Grock, known as the ‘King of Clowns’ thanks to his extraordinary talents, enchanted audiences worldwide in the first half of the 20th century. After a random visit to Imperia in 1920, he decided to buy a property that became his permanent residence until 1959, the year of his death. The villa, which stands today on the hill of Oneglia, and its garden bear witness to an artistic legacy that continues to shine through Grock’s famous smile.
An extraordinary artist: juggler, tightrope walker, acrobat, able to play a large number of musical instruments (he built the world’s smallest violin with his own hands) and to speak no less than eight languages, he enchanted audiences all over the world, transforming his rounded stage name into an authentic legend.
Upon entering the park, you will be immediately struck by the beauty of its ponds, fountains and waterfalls, which create an enchanting atmosphere. A staircase adorned with Masonic friezes and sculptures leads to the villa, an Art Nouveau jewel offering spectacular views of Imperia Oneglia harbour and the gulf. Don’t miss the fountain pond, a special place where Grock loved to spend time, and the bronze fountain, where the play of the waters reproduces the sound of the applause that marked his triumphs on stage.
We highly recommend a guided tour: the guides are very knowledgeable and will be able to reveal unexpected curiosities and details. The tour lasts about an hour, but you can stay and explore the rooms, enjoy a drink at the bar or stroll through the park until closing time. In summer, the villa remains open until 10 p.m., and it is in the magic of the evening that the play of light will create an unforgettable atmosphere.
Don’t miss the opportunity to have a unique experience at Villa Grock, where the charm of the past and the beauty of the place will transport you to a world of enchantment and creativity.
