At only 30 minutes by feet from the Hotel Ligure – or 5 minutes by bus – you can reach Laigueglia, a charming village<\/strong> steeped in history with tales of corals, sailors and merchants.<\/p>\n

The name may derive from “Eagle”, symbol of Roman Legions, because the area were inhabited as early as the Roman Empire. Anthore, less popular, theory links it to the streams that once in the past crossed the land.<\/p>\n

During the 12th century, Laigueglia was part of the “County of Albenga” and it developed thanks to coral fishing<\/strong>, which attracted Catalan families. Even it is known as a fishing village, fishing was mostly for family use: it was the coral trade that brought wealth to che city… and some pirade raids. The most famous dates back to 1546, when the Corsair Dragut sacked the village<\/strong>, prompting the inhabitants to build three defensive towers.<\/p>\n

Every summer, between July and August, Laigueglia commemorates that historic moment with the spectacular “Sbarco dei Saraceni”. It is a theatrical performance that tells Dragut’s incursion and celebrates the resistance of the local population. With three suggestive scenes and a medieval atmosphere, the village becomes an open-air stage, giving emotions and a real dip back to the past.<\/p>\n

Today, Laigueglia is a picturesque seaside village<\/strong>, with a seafront promenade that offers breathtaking views on the Baia del Sole. From here, it is possibile to admire the Gallinara Island and, in the clearest days, even Corsica.<\/p>\n

What to do in Laigueglia<\/strong><\/h3>\n

  1. Wander in the historic center<\/strong><\/span> Through the picturesque narrow streets, brightly colored houses and small bars overlooking the sea, Laigueglia is the ideal place to let go and taste the authentic atmosphere of Ligurian villages.<\/li>\n
  2. Discover the Promenade on the sea and the Levante Torrione<\/strong> <\/span>The only remaining tower of the three built during the 16th century is today a charming corner, framed by the small harbor and the colorful fishing boats. From here, the view of the coast is incomparable.<\/li>\n
  3. Visit the Church of San Matteo<\/strong> <\/span>The two bell towers stand up over the village and they are its most recognizable symbols. Inside, 13 altars decorated by the most influential families tell stories of faith, art and power.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
